Building My Charlotte: The Queen City and its Architects

Picture Perfect Homes

As Martin Boyer, Louis Asbury, and C. C. Hook were adding their individual designs to the residential areas of Charlotte, visitors to the city were enjoying the aesthetic value of these new homes.  Postcard companies promoted the beauty of homes such as the Stuart Cramer House, New Hawley Residence, and Home of R.O. Alexander, as well as quaint streetscapes of Charlotte's neighborhoods, featured above by the "Views of Dilworth" postcard.

These postcards also display Charlotte as a rising center of commerce and industrialization.  The fountain at J. B. Duke's Estate highlights the affluence of men like Duke, who made his fortune as a tobacco and electric power industrialist.  Similarly, the home of R. M. Miller, Jr. demonstrates the extravagance of one who made his fortune in the cotton mill industry.  These postcards actively promoted visitation to Charlotte, adding to its development as a New South city.
