Building My Charlotte: The Queen City and its Architects

Mayfair Hotel

When the Mayfair Hotel opened in November 1929, half of its 100 rooms were originally reserved for permanent residents.  This included the owner, Dr. J.P. Matheson, who lived in the penthouse on the top floor. The penthouse features two balconies overlooking uptown Charlotte.  By renting half of its rooms as luxury apartments the Mayfair Hotel was able to flourish even through the Great Depression.

The Mayfair Hotel is still standing in Charlotte.  It is now call the Dunhill Hotel and was completely restored in 1988.  In 1991 it was put on the Nation Trust's seventy-five Historic Hotels of America list.

The building is sand-colored brick with a cast stone facade.  The simplictiy of the geometric shapes and the symmetry of this building classifies it as Neoclassical. (1)
