Building My Charlotte: The Queen City and its Architects

As Seen through a Postcard

Modern postcards of Charlotte offer a much different view than those at the beginning of the twentieth century.  Less intimate, these postcards highlight the beauty and serenity of the city from a distance, revealing a calm skyline during the surreal hours of sunrise or sunset.  The glowing quality of these images portray a sense of escape from the reality of the hustle and bustle held between the towering skyscrapers.

Contrasted with earlier views of the city, these modern postcards perhaps reveal a fascination with the glamour of a city's night life, or its ability to stay up-to-date with growing economies and urban lifestyles.  Many cities today boast recognizable skylines: the Space Needle of Seattle, the Empire State Building of New York City, the Golden Gate Bridge of San Francisco.  Defined by the Wells Fargo Bank building, these postcards highlight the distinguishable aspects of Charlotte's skyline.
