Building My Charlotte: The Queen City and its Architects

Walking the Streets

Compare and contrast the streetscapes with these postcards and photographs.  Travel through time and see Louis Asbury's First National Bank and Mecklenburg County Courthouse artistically rendered in the first half of the twentieth century compared with photographs of these buildings in 2012.  Explore how West Trade Street and Tryon Street have changed over the past century.  While many parts of the city have changed, particularly in the modern views of Tryon Street and West Trade Street, some buildings are still recognizable.  For example, the Fifth Third Bank building on Tryon Street is visible in both images on the left side of the street. This building was originally constructed in 1924 as the Johnston Building.  Conversely, the West Trade Street images show just how drastically Charlotte has changed--the trolley lines have been removed and many of the buildings have been taken down.
